The Parable of the Butterfly (Easter), taken from http://www.joyfulheart.com

As a butterfly soared overhead, one caterpillar said to the other,
"You'll never get me up in one of those things."
Yet for every caterpillar the time comes when the urge to eat and grow subsides and he instinctively begins to form a chrysalis around himself. The chrysalis hardens and you'd think for all the world that the caterpillar is dead.

But one spring morning the life inside the chrysalis begins to writhe, the top cracks open, and a beautifully-formed butterfly emerges. For hours it will stand stretching and drying its wings, moving them slowly up and down, up and down. And then, before you know it, the butterfly glides aloft, effortlessly riding the currents of the air, alighting on flower after gorgeous flower, as if to show off its vivid colors to the bright blossoms. .

Somehow, the miracle of the butterfly never loses its fascination for us. Perhaps because the butterfly is a living parable of the promise of resurrection.

On Easter morning the disciples saw Jesus' graveclothes lying on the cold slab still wrapped round and round the corpse. Only the corpse was gone, much like an empty chrysalis deserted by a butterfly who has left to soar free. "He is risen as He said," an angel told the incredulous disciples. Later that day he appeared to the disciples, and then, over the course of the next few weeks, to as many as five hundred people at one time. Even "Doubting Thomas" didn't doubt for long that Jesus was really risen from the dead.

A few weeks ago I lost a friend who had become dear to me. Where she had been so full of life, now her body lay still, composed ever-so-carefully by the morticians. I looked at her and thought about my own mortality. One day I too, like her, may fight a losing battle with pain, and die.

What do we Christians say in the face of death? There are many mysteries. But two things we know for sure. First, death is an enemy. Away with the sentimentality that vainly seeks to disguise death's insult! But second, and more important, Jesus' resurrection from the grave is God's proof to us that death is not the end. The empty tomb and Jesus' Spirit within us testify that Easter morning is God's triumph over death. And ultimately, Jesus promised, God will raise from the dead us who believe in His Son.

Why do Christians gather on Easter morning? To show off their fine clothes or give a ritual tip of the hat to religion? God forbid! Rather we gather to celebrate Jesus' victory over death itself. For since He is our Lord and our Savior, His victory is our victory. In celebrating His resurrection we celebrate our own assurance of ultimate triumph over death.

Join us this Easter as we celebrate Life! And if you look closely Easter morning, you might even see a butterfly alight on the lilies.

Have a Happy Easter. :)

Is it Really Enough? by Tom Norvell (www.heartlight.org)

When they asked Jesus, "Which is the most important of all the commands?" Jesus said, "Love God with all your heart and soul and mind and strength. Then, love your neighbor as yourself. All the others hang on these two" (Matthew 22:34-40).

My question: Is this enough?

Jesus said these are the most important things: Love God and love people.

My question: Is this enough?

For those asking the original question, it seems the answer did not satisfy. Jesus follows His answer with a question for them, "What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is he?" (v. 42) After they wrestled with the question Matthew says, "No one could say a word in reply, and from that day on no one dared to ask him any more questions" (Matthew 22:46 MSG).

In chapter 23, Jesus speaks to the crowds and to his disciples: "The teachers of the Law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach" (23:2-3).

The rest of chapter 23 contains some of the most harsh statements ever uttered by Jesus.

Again, my question: Is love for God and love for people enough?

What if it was? What if we took Jesus seriously? What if we said that loving God and loving people is our goal — that these two would be priority #1 and #2 in our lives?
It's worth a try, don't you think?

If we would let loving God and loving people be enough, there would be few arguments about following His teaching and doing whatever He called upon us to do. He addresses this very clearly in some of His last words with His disciples (John 13:1-17:26). Most of the issues we debate about would possibly be resolved. He clears up many of these questions — hard questions we wrestle with — in His sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7), but again, these all focus down to these two basic priorities.

If we would let loving God and loving people be enough, many of the issues of "Who is lovable and who is not?", "Who is acceptable in the Kingdom and who is not?", "What is right and what is wrong for God's people to do in worship, in business, in marriage, and in all our relationships?" could be settled. Or better yet, they would never surface. It might bring some clarity to many of the questions we have about how to take care of our planet, poverty, war, and how to interact with people of other races and religions.

All these good things could happen if we would let loving God and loving people be enough. So, we're back to the question: is it enough?

This is not a question to be answered only by the religious leaders of Jesus' day, or our day. It is the fundamental question we all must answer. As Jesus said, everything else depends on how we answer this question. Everything else in my life depends on how I answer this question. So it is rather important.

A new week is upon us. A new challenge is before us. Will we love God and love people this week as of first importance? Will that be enough? Will we let it be enough?

It's worth a try, don't you think?

This week: love God and love people.

God's Garden

The fresh smell of the mountain air and the cold squishy sensation of Yosemite's sub-alpine meadows under bare feet invigorated the senses. My 21-month-old daughter jounced in the "Geri Carrier" on my back as we hiked along a mountain stream which was to become the Tuolumne River. We passed through vivid patches of hundreds of wildflowers in sunny openings along the stream. There was the orange brilliance of the Sierra Tiger Lily, the bright blue-purple of Bush Lupine against the lush green foliage, here and there the surprise of a Shooting Star--and if one looked closely, a Scarlet Columbine. The list went on and on.

I found myself telling my daughter riding behind me, "Annie, this is God's garden." The beauty filled me with joy. But the concept of God's Garden set my mind imagining what God liked in His garden.

God must love variety, I thought. Even plants of the same species are different--some tall, some leafy, others with a profusion of flowers. God must love variety! He is not the God of an assembly line creation, but One who loves and appreciates the differences. Cloning is a distinctly man-made aping of Deity.

We often feel insecure when we perceive differences between ourselves and others. We feel that we may be somehow irregular and not quite right. The truth is, God loves variety. All His plants are different. That's the way He likes it. God made us this way and loves us for our uniqueness. He created our uniqueness for His own purposes.

There is a beautiful verse in Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV):

The Lord your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing."

As Annie and I walked through God's garden in the high mountain meadows of Yosemite, my heart was thrilled and filled with joy from the beauty of it. I am sure that, in the same way, God longs to rejoice, sing for joy, over His people, His church.

We are God's garden, the planting of the Lord. Singly we are unique flowers, together a garden. I pray that He enjoys visiting His gardens on Sunday mornings. And I hope He whistles in His heart to the songs we are singing to Him.
Annie, we are God's garden.
